How to easily move from Hotmail to Gmail using POP3

// May 24th, 2009 // No Comments » // Uncategorized

I finally decided to open myself a Gmail account, I have used hotmail for years so had a lot of old mail I didn’t want to loose. Fortunately Hotmail have recently allowed POP3 access for all accounts, though they don’t go out of the way to promote it.

POP3 is great as it allows you an easy way to both import your email from hotmail, and also allow Gmail to keep checking and recieving your email from hotmail so you don’t miss anything.

Here are the steps of how to do it.

Firstly you need to open up a gmail account. Once you have your account up and running go to settings

gmailsettings1

Under Accounts and Import select add POP3 Account

settings-accounts

settings-accounts

A popup window will show, enter your hotmail email address

Enter Hotmail email address

Enter Hotmail email address

Googlemail should realise you have entered a hotmail account and know the pop settings (if not try the pop setting below.

Enter your password, if you want to import all your mail make sure leave a copy of the retrieved mail on the server is unchecked

Click Add account

Google mail will ask if you want to be able to send email via your hotmail account i.e. send email from gmail but make it appear to the recipient that is has come from your hotmail address (it will go via hotmail’s servers). If you do click to say so and an email will be sent to your hotmail to verify you are the owner.

You can wait and enter the code on the email in the below window, or simply click the link in the email. Beware the email will likely end up in your hotmail Junk folder.

You will then have the option in Google Mail to send email from either account

Once setup is complete Google mail will then ‘check’ your hotmail account and download all the mail in your inbox. Once this is complete your hotmail inbox should be empty and your Gmail inbox should show all the mail.

Gmail Checking Hotmail

Gmail Checking Hotmail

Google mail will routinely check your hotmail for new mesages. Remember it will not download ‘junk’ email from hotmail, so it is a good idea to check your hotmail every so often just to ensure nothing you want is stuck in your junk folder.

If you have your hotmail organised into folders, Google mail won’t automatically download this mail. However in hotmail if you move the mail from the folder into your inbox, and force gmail to check your hotmail (under settings/accounts and import) Gmail can also download this mail.

Note it maybe easier to organise the email from your hotmail inbox first, then move your hotmail folder by folder, as it will be easy to label the ‘new’ mail in the gmail inbox with a label simular to the folder you had in hotmail.

Google mail works on the basis of labels rather than folders (see the gmail help for more on that), it is very easy to fillter your mail and add rules to label mail

You will also likely have a lot of email in your inbox that you want to ‘Mark as read’

Gmail works on the basis of archiving email rather than deleting it, so if you want to remove items from your inbox simply archive them, that way they will still be there if you need to search for them (with googles excellent search) if you ever need it.

Windows 7 RC – disapearing NIC on HP laptop – workaround

// May 18th, 2009 // 3 Comments » // Software

I have been running the windows 7 RC on multiple machines and have generally been very impressed, finding very little that doesn’t work. One issue I have had is that on my HP 6730b laptop every so often the LAN network adapter (NIC) would disappear, giving no option to connect to the wired LAN.

No NIC Windows 7

Windows 7 Device Manager no NIC

Windows 7 Device Manager no NIC

I narrowed this issue down to the fact that when running on wireless and on the battery, the laptop puts the NIC to sleep to conserve power (and you hear the removed hardware ‘bong’), a good idea, but it doesn’t seem to wake it back up when you insert a connection into it, either plugged in or not (did on vista). A reboot solved the issue but is hardly convient.

A workaround is to turn the NIC powersaving feature off in the bios, on the HP its called “LAN Power Save”, set to disable and your NIC won’t go to sleep, at the expense or a little bit of battery life.

Under the device there is also an option to stop windows turning off the NIC which I suspect may also solve the issue

For those who are interested, below is the driver version, which is the latest from the HP site. Hopefully we’ll see this issue solved with a driver update/in the Windows 7 RTM.

If anyone else has noticed this issue or has a better resolution I’d be interested to hear. Please leave a comment or catch me on twitter

Problem with BCC iplayer on iphone after installing safari download plugin

// December 30th, 2008 // No Comments » // Uncategorized

Just a quick one. After installing the safari download plugin for the iphone I found that the BBC iplayer stopped working, instead the page prompted me to download or play index.html – however when hitting play it would not play the file.

I found on cydia there is a plugin for boss prefs to turn on and off the download plugin, very handy! – just search for download on cydia.

Many thanks to the relevent programers and everyone in the iphone scene!

Upgrading Amstrad PVR3 Sky+ to 500gig hard drive

// September 29th, 2008 // No Comments » // Uncategorized

It didn’t take me long to decide to upgrade the HD in my sky+. The stock drive was quiet enough spinning and reading but did have an annoying high pitched squeak all the time. The stockdrive is a seagate, I think I probably just got a slightly noisy one.

I went for another Seagate Consumer electronics drive model ST3500830ACE.

Install was easy. Just swapped the drive. At first the box just booted up blank with the HD constantly running. I then did the following:
unplug the digibox from the mains power. Press and hold the ‘left’ and ‘right’ navigation buttons on the front of the digibox whilst you plug it back into the mains. Continue holding the buttons in for about 20 seconds, and when the ring of light on the front comes on, press the ‘select’ button on the front of the digibox (between the left and right buttons you were holding). The Sky+ recording logo lights will spin backwards and, according to the Sky engineer, this will “clear the hard drive”.
Once this is done, unplug the digibox from the mains power again and this time press and hold the ‘back up’ button whilst you plug it back into the mains power. Continue holding it for about 15 seconds until 3 lights on the front of the box come on and you get a full-screen message saying “Updating system software. Do not disconnect mains supply or satellite dish.”
Leave the digibox doing its thing for about 10 minutes and it should be fixed! Try pausing and recording things again… hopefully you’ve just saved yourself £65.
If you’ve not been so lucky, call Sky* again but remember that if they try to charge you for an engineer callout, just ask to cancel your subscription and they should offer you a free callout to fix the problem – you’re more valuable to them as a paying customer than the cost of an engineer callout.

Props to http://www.satellites.co.uk/satellite/sky-pvr-systems/62938-sky-cant-reformat.html

All works great, pretty quiet (slight reading sound but nothing bad) and much less of a squeak.

Tempted to put the drive in an enclosure to reduce the noise further but will probably leave it alone for a bit.

Feel free to comment if you have any questions..

Update 10.10.08

All working fine still, I have noticed a few blips in audio on some recordings and the sound takes longer to start when you start to play a video sometimes (only a few seconds, but noticably longer than with the other drive). I have also notices that the program discriptions (when you press ‘i’ button) sometimes get muddled on the planner which is odd but not to much of a problem.
